3D Moto Racing Fever

A big winner from start to finish

You probably know what to expect from arcade racing games. Fast action, high speed turns and a lot of nitro boosting. Moto Racing Fever 3D takes everything that makes arcade racing so good and, what's this?! Adds a story to boot! Digital Chocolate have come up with a great racer here which delivers on every level.

The storyline, however sparse, is present nonetheless and is a welcome addition, it's something you wouldn't normally expect from a motorbike racing game. Your name is Sam Petrol, and your mission - to join the greatest motorcycle club in the world, Racing Fever MC. You even have a romantic interest, a very mysterious romantic interest at that. The story is presented in the form of a cutscene after each race, each cutscene is exactly the same just with different dialogue and different characters involved. I won't give anything away, but the storyline is pretty tame and won't be the reason you'll be so impressed with the game. That's what the actual racing is for!

The racing you'll do in Moto Racing Fever is well paced, each race runs for about a minute and there are enough obstacles and powerups (little adrenaline pills) to keep you interested. The competition can be pretty tough, but on the other hand the game is very forgiving, even coming 3rd out of 4 racers will get you through to the next race! The controls are what you'd expect, the keys 4 and 6 (or the keypad on your handset) are used to turn and that's about it.
Turning is so often something that brings a racing game down, if the turning is a little bit too responsive or not responsive enough it can completely change a game. Digital Chocolate have hit the nail on the head here, and as an arcade game its very easy to turn and this works a treat. Very easy to get used to, and very fun to play.

Despite the fact that the story mode features an impressive 27 races needed to complete the game, there are in fact only 3 courses to choose from in the whole game. There are 3 chapters of the story to complete, with each stage made up of 9 races. The 9 races are made up of 3 races of the same course. Racing 27 races with just 3 different variations in course does get pretty monotonous, and although the courses themselves are well designed and the story does go someway to distract from the repetition, some more tracks definitely would've been appreciated.

The graphics in Moto Racing Fever 3D are top stuff. 3D of course, the game runs very smoothly and the graphics work very well. The game has a cartoony look, bright and colourful, and this suits the ridiculous storyline and cheesy sound nicely. Everything looks great, and it's good to see that Digital Chocolate have not aimed too high, and have gone for a cartoony and simple yet three dimensional look that is easy on the eye and still manages to look brilliant.
The sound is in keeping with the rest of the presentation aspects of the game; its retro, it's cheesy, but it works. The different tunes you'll here definitely won't be rockin' the Top 40 charts any time soon (I wouldn't be surprised if they did 20 years ago) but the polyphonic tunes set the mood well and accompany the speedy action on screen like a hamburger with fries. And that's a darn decent match.

I really liked Moto Racing Fever 3D. It's fun, flashy, and does everything right. Some more courses would've been nice, but in its own right the game is a lot of fun and well worth your money.
